I have never seen a post or video or image that praised or glorified the so-called comfort zone. A significant percentage of the content around comfort zone is about “how to get out of your comfort zone, why you should never allow yourself to be in the comfort zone, etc.”. The Question is, “is there another side we don’t look at?”

The Origin of Comfort Zone

Perhaps the comfort zone thingie comes from the long-standing cultural perception (yes, almost all the cultures of the world praise being busy, not taking a break, etc.), and I get that sometimes, circumstances force people to keep rolling the wheel.

Perhaps the comfort zone is seen as a bad thing because sleep, rest, or anything that seems less vigorous (physically, emotionally, financially, spiritually, etc.) is dubbed as laziness and as such highly stigmatized. Tell me you haven’t seen or heard of people who are mocked, made fun of, or disrespected and attacked because no matter how much in order their affairs are, they do not seem to be engaging in the level of busy-ness and energy defined by their social settings. Oh, this is where gender roles hit hard and double standards or gender abuse lists highest.

Or perhaps, the idea of the Comfort Zone being uncomfortable is our own doing; feeling like we need to be socially compliant and act/ be busy even when we have earned our rest or deserve a break for our physical and mental health.

The Importance of a Break

A break is good whether it’s after an achievement or in the thick of things.

In the thick of things, rest is good to help rejuvenate, re-energize, and or re-strategize.

After achievement, rest is a good reward allowing you to enjoy what you worked so hard for.

If a break is good, why are we so opposed to and uncomfortable about it?

We don’t rest. Do we? We keep going and going until we totally lose what it means to enjoy life or until our bodies and minds collapse and we have to be forced by doctors to ‘rest’. Some of us will take the doctors’ orders seriously but seeing as we are used to running around since we became aware of ourselves and our social environment, it’s hard to just rest. This is when people come up with “what do these doctors know?” Or we start sneaking into activities as long as the doctor doesn’t know about it. Who are we fooling?

To Allow some time in your Comfort Zone or NOT?

My take on the comfort zone is for us to look at it using a different lens. A lens that’s different from seeing the comfort zone as inherently lazy, evil, and unambitious.

Is it that phase of your life where everything (or at least a majority of things) has aligned and you are not overly stressed?

Is it that phase of your life where you have enough cushion (be it social, physical, health, financial, etc.) that you are not overly worried about tomorrow or you can go to sleep peacefully?

Is it that phase/ season of your life where you feel your life is going in the direction it should be?
If it is a good season, why then do we villainize it so much?

Why then do we villainize such a good moment/ season?

While I am not saying that you should forever be content with living in your comfort zone forever (but maybe you should if it is that good and ideal for you). All I am saying is that sometimes we allow ourselves the calm and peace and certainty and happiness that the comfort zone offers you for a while.

If getting out of your comfort zone means improving your situation and being safer and cushioned than you currently are, then go for it.

If getting out of your comfort zone means unlocking your potential and self-actualizing (living the highest and best life you ever dreamt for yourself), then go for it.

CAUTION: When Getting out of your Comfort Zone, Have a Plan

Do not get out of your comfort zone for flimsy reasons or without a plan. See the last paragraph for some tips on how to assess your comfort zone parameters, and how to come up with a strategic plan that can help you safely get out of your comfort zone to the improved status/situation that you currently envision while minimizing risks.

You do not want to ruin a good thing or risk your current functional space (safe, working, financially, emotionally, mentally, physically, spiritually… space) over non-reasons or by jumping out with a good plan.

Otherwise, you might fall out of and below your comfort zone and now you will be struggling to get back to that safe space because your new space lacks everything that made your life meaningful in the comfort zone you were so eager to leave.

Why People Get Out of the Comfort Zones

Different people have different motivations for wanting to move out of their comfort zones.

1. Public Opinion / Social Pressure.

What do you know about trends? not necessarily Twitte trends, but anything that piques the interest of a population, and for a time, it almost becomes like the ‘in-thing’. Fashion trends, dieting trends, beliefs, parenting, employment, mass-quitting, toxic positivism, trolling, etc. The list of things that trend is endless and ‘Get out of Comfort Zone’ happens to be one of those trends. With this one, some people’s reason for moving out of their comfort zone is just because everyone keeps harping on the need to move out of their comfort zone. I find this one of the most dangerous (uncalculated risk) moves because emotional moves without a logical plan can be unsustainable, and it can be a lot of pressure to keep moving, sometimes even when the resources for moving aren’t present.

2. Need for Increased Security (Financial, Social, etc)

A genuine need to improve the current life status quo to something better;  have more cushion (mentally, physically, financially, etc) to enable them deal with future uncertainties.

3. Personal Growth and Self-Actualization

Growth and Self-Actualization – reach your potential, hence improving your situation to a self-actualization one. Your growth is probably geared towards your happiness or your desire to be of more service to others and the courses that have meaning to you. And sometimes, people want to get out of the comfort zone to make a point or proof to others (probably haters). Don’t even think about laughing at this; I have seen enough people whose motivation for changing their status quo is to  ‘size their enemies’ or ‘keep up with peers’

Whatever your reasons: look at this

All the reasons considered, do yourself a favor and define what your Comfort Zone is to you, why you should or should not stay in it for long, and most importantly, no matter the pressure (from yourself or your social environment), DO NOT jump out of your comfort zone blindly. I know this sounds like a lot; all these considerations and questions and you are probably how to go about this. This is where a Life Coach worth their salt should be able to assist you; you just talk and they try to make sense of all you are saying and together you can start classifying what matters to you versus what you could do without and not feel the pinch, your current resources, and needs, where you want to go, how to get there realistically, etc.

Having a Strategic Plan (a well-thought-out plan that increases your success and minimizes your risks) gives you some peace of mind in knowing that your staying or moving out of your comfort zone is well-informed and your success chances are higher than you landing in a disaster.

Read/ watch more below on how to go about Strategic Planning

You can soberly develop a strategic plan for anything small or big to increase your chances of achieving your goals while minimizing the risk or at least having some mechanisms in place on how to deal with seen and unforeseen risks.

Do not ruin a good thing because you could not still and you jumped blindly.

Your Coach: Choosing your Life Coach

Life Coaching (Guidance and Support)
Life Coaching (Guidance and Support)

The success of any coaching process is greatly influenced by the relationship you have with your coach. Trust, professionality, confidentiality, a safe space, openness, and non-judgmental are key prerequisites for fruitful coaching. Do not feel like you have to vibe with just any coach just because s/he comes recommended by person A or B. It is important that you choose your coach wisely and NOT feel pressured. It is for this reason that most coaches will offer some minutes of free consultation (called chemistry call) where both of you can have an initial knowing-each-other session to establish whether you are okay working with each other, and if so, how to proceed. Just because you do not feel okay with a coach or the coach is not in a position to continue working with you doesn’t mean that either of you is bad; both of you can still find other matches for you. It’s like preferring tea over coffee or any other beverage. It doesn’t make the other beverages less beverage-y (if there’s such a word).

Factors Influencing your choice of a coach

In my experience, I find that different people prefer different things/ qualities/ traits from a coach. Personally, I found out that my requirements for a coach are first and foremost empathy, the ability to listen, reflecting back to me (putting my random thoughts into a more organized format that allows me to sort out each idea with the importance due it), and sharing tools of processing/ addressing some of the specific issues I had. The coach, for me, doesn’t have to have had similar life experiences to mine or expertise in everything I dreamt of pursuing; just being present and walking with me (oh, and the accountability and cheerleading bit) was enough to help me process so much with excellent results. Shout out to my coach. We are worlds apart but she gets me and she’s amazing.

Other people prefer coaches who are more or less like them; with similar backgrounds, experiences, expertise, etc. and that is absolutely okay.

Life Coaching Process

NB: You do not need to have everything figured out when seeking a coach (that’s what coaching will help you figure out); you are not being interviewed or assessed and if your coach makes you feel this way; leave. Make sure that during your first consultation meeting (whether free or not) you get to assess the atmosphere, the kind of person your coach is, whether or not you feel safe talking to him/ her, etc. If everything feels okay with you, you can then discuss how you want to proceed; the duration and frequency of future sessions, your role and your coach’s role, and everything else you feel you need to discuss with your coach for future coaching sessions.

 Duration of Life Coaching

This could be a few or many sessions. Of course, you are free to keep your coach for as long as you want and let go only when you achieve the goal(s) you envisioned or start seeing your coach again to work on other aspects. Depending on your goals, you may also choose to have one coach at a time (perhaps an expert in something specific you need- especially if you need technical guidance on a certain field/ niche-).

We live in societies that hush some conversations, and we have less support (especially during hardships or triumphs) than we need. We could do with a little encouragement, support, inspiration, guidance, and cheerleading. This website (and associated platforms including YouTube and Amazon Books) are all about is about Self Improvement, Personal Development, and Personal Growth. This is a safe space; we have fun, we sharpen/ build each other, we cry together, and we celebrate together.

Life Coaching is all about getting support and guidance (read more about what it is and what it is not here.

Why and When do you Need Life Coaching?

Life Coaching Helps you:

Since LIFE DOESN’T COME WITH A MANUAL, and everyone has his/her life journey and opinions. life coaching helps you keep a tab on your well-being.  YOU DESERVE TO LIVE YOUR BEST LIFE and YOU CAN through some of the resources we share here as well as life coaching services with a coach you are okay with. (Find out how to choose the best coach for you here).

  • Figure out how to identify and make the best of our talents/ privileges, strengths, etc. –

Welcome ALL

Again, seeing as life doesn’t come with a manual, and we differ in terms of physical, emotional, financial, etc. resources, it DOES help to talk things over with someone empathetic or a professional guide or listen to relatable and or inspiring real-life stories to help you map your path.

Life Coaching: What is Life Coaching and How Does it Look like?

Life Coaching, Strategic Planning, Systemic Coaching, or Professional Life Coaching need not be a life-long process but rather a process that lasts only as long as it takes for you to get the clarity you need, have a strategic plan on how to pursue your goals and at least guidance during the first few steps as you start implementing.

A Professional Life Coach Should Give you the Following

  • – A professional, safe, friendly, and confidential space to process the aspects of your life you wish to work on.
  • – Share with you a wealth of professional knowledge, skills, and tools (tailored to your specific needs and life goals/ objectives), to unlock your potential and come up with a great plan that can help you work towards your goals.
  • – Walk with you and be your accountability partner and cheerleader so that the pursuit of your goals is less-overwhelming and manageable to you in terms of time, physical, emotional, and financial resources, as well as your pace.
  • – Do NOT give you any cliché solutions (one-size-fits-all) out there, but rather work with you to figure out your needs and goals, hence a personalized strategic plan for you.

A Life Coach should help you break down your Dreams into actionable steps that are 100% within your physical, emotional, mental, financial, social, etc. capacity.

Now, isn’t that a beautiful thing; that you can dream as big as you wish without breaking your back or bank? The only thing required of you is time: time to allow yourself realistically process everything you need to, time to allow you to come up with a realistic plan, and time between your first steps to your dreams to achieving those dreams. Don’t you worry, I will be there to guide you; as your accountability partner, an expert in specific aspects (such as strategic planning, overcoming limitations and destructive habits, capacity-building, etc.), a guide, and most importantly, your cheerleader and non-judgmental professional companion.

Sessions are usually 45-70 minutes long and depending on what you are working on, you can choose to have a weekly, bi-weekly, bi-monthly, monthly, session after every six weeks, etc. or sessions in quick succession depending on what you and your coach are processing in your life and how fast and realistically you can achieve the results. Technically, coaching should not be a life-long process, but you can have a mentor if you are already on your way to achieving your goals but still need someone to consult with once in a while.

Example:

Un-Tell by Maggie's DIY - Life Coaching
Life Coaching Process

If you seek a Life Coach because you are seeking to process a number of issues in your life or to figure out your way forward in terms of career, relationships, or other life aspects, it makes sense to have the coaching sessions a little further apart (perhaps monthly or after several weeks), but the first two or three sessions could be held within the month as you try to get clarity. The further apart sessions help give you sufficient time to process or implement in between the sessions what you agree with your coach. Remember the goal of coaching is to get you from an uncomfortable, Comfort Zone, or undesirable/ Unstuck position to a better status that you envision in a realistic and healthy manner. Coaching should not be a stressful, overwhelming, or traumatizing process for you because then it would beat the point of you … and the results/ implementation plan won’t be sustainable. A stressful coaching process is a waste of your energy and resources including finance and time. Please check out some videos on this on my website (www.Un-Tell.com ) and YouTube (Un-Tell by Maggie’s DIY) to get a better understanding of this. You can also contact me with your questions.

This could be a few or many sessions.
